Community is a key element in the fight against unwanted loneliness in older adults. We will explore the structural factors that have led to this phenomenon and the keys to combating it.
Are you a healthcare or social services professional, do you volunteer with elderly people, or are you generally interested in the topic of unwanted loneliness?
Unwanted loneliness is often called the silent epidemic of the 21st century due to its widespread presence in Western society. Although it is a subjective and unwanted feeling related to the lack or loss of companionship, current socioeconomic conditions have transformed it into a significant risk factor for the mental and physical health of older adults . This phenomenon was exacerbated by the pandemic, which led to the suspension of much of the public's social interaction and community activity.
According to data from SoledadES, 13.4% of people suffer from unwanted loneliness, affecting women (14.8%) more than men (12.1%). Young people experience the most unwanted loneliness. This feeling decreases with age until it spikes again in people over 75. Furthermore, it is a long-standing feeling, as people report having been in this situation for at least six years.
Preventing and detecting these situations are key to improving the health and quality of life of older adults. In this online meeting, we will review current data on loneliness among the elderly, the role of the community, and explore intervention initiatives to combat loneliness.
